HISTORY THAT LIVES
Koprivshtitsa plays significant role in Bulgarian history. For Bulgarians,
Koprivshtitsa is a symbol for the freedom gained after five hundreds of years of
Turkish occupation. On the 20th of April, 1876 the first shoots fell on the
famous bridge, marking the beginning of the End of the 500-year occupation.
An astounding number of renowned Bulgarians - writers,
poets, revolutionist and politicians have come forth from the small
mountain village Koprivshtitsa.
The
houses in which they were born now serve as museums honouring these great
persons and episodes of Bulgarian history. The most noteworthy of these places
are the Oslekov House (erected in 1856) with its impressive interior, wood
carvings and wall paintings, the Liutov House, a prime example of 'Bulgarian
baroque', and the Kableshkov house, with typical interior design and an exhibit
highlighting the fight for independence.
There are 'each one offering' six museums in Koprivshtitsa, each offering insight into the various aspects of culture, history and lifestyles of the bygone era.
